glock dry firing

Glock Dry Firing - I assume you have read one of the many pieces of content on our website that explain the importance of dry fire practice. Otherwise, you cannot check these messages later. Right now, you're probably wondering, "Which dry-fire training rifle should I buy?"

As a full-time industry professional; and as a retailer who carries most of these products, I'm happy to have one of everything; I am therefore in a unique position to compare these products head-on. If you're looking for other dry-fire tools besides the gun itself, consider this other article I wrote: Dry-Fire Tools.

Glock Dry Firing

Glock Dry Firing

I don't mean that this is a comprehensive review of these products individually (and a quick Google search should turn up plenty of reviews.) Rather, a more direct look at them in comparison.

I divide the products into 4 categories and review them roughly by cost. Let's start...

Before we talk about ways to spend money on a dedicated firearm, let's remember that you can dry fire your own firearm. This option may not be as ideal as the others in this article. It has some advantages though, including the holster, range and trigger practice, and no expensive dedicated practice gun.

However, since safety is our most important consideration and accuracy feedback, it is important to consider 4 products to install in your own firearm before practicing dry firing.

BarrelBlok is the cheapest way to ensure a safe, dry fire. It slips into the barrel through the ejection port and sits comfortably in the chamber. Cleverly designed for a specific caliber, which ensures a good fit. Additionally, it protrudes from the end of the barrel so that the user and other nearby observers can visually verify that the firearm is inert and safe.

When installed, the firearm is unable to chamber or fire. BarrelBlok is sold as a package with 3 "Mag-Bloks" which are inserted into the magazine. These elements press on the follower and prevent the slide from locking. This makes training with reloading and other manipulations more realistic.

Summary: Easily installs into any gun without disassembly and ensures the gun is secure during dry firing. Will not work with laser cartridge inserts.

Striker pistols, like Glocks, can be a challenge for dry-firing because after each pull of the trigger you have to manually reset the slide by "stuffing" or cycling it. Thus introducing a potential training scar from the jerky slide after each trigger pull.

Glock Dry Firing

The Glock E-Trainer (short for Easy Trainer) installs without tools or disassembly and prevents the trigger from "breaking", allowing for repeated trigger pulls without the need to reset by moving the slide.

It eliminates the feeling of picking up, breaking and resetting, but can be used to practice several exercises, reloading and other manipulations. In addition, once installed, the firearm becomes inert and safe. Currently only available for Glock pistols, as the name suggests.

Summary: Put it on your Glock and you will no longer have to fiddle with the slide to reset the trigger.

The DryFireMag solves the same problem as the Glock Easy Trainer, specifically allowing repeated trigger manipulations without slide jerkiness.

However, it simulates the interrupt and reset of the trigger, although it is different from the normal interrupt and reset of the trigger. It also has an audible click sound for every trigger pull, which an equal number of users love and hate.

Complete Dry Fire Practice Kit

Also, unlike the Glock E-Trainer, the DryFireMag is available for select Glocks ET Smith And Wesson M&P pistols.

Summary: A replacement magazine that allows repeated pulls of the trigger without breaking the slide. Available for some Glocks and M&Ps.

A laser cartridge (the most generic term for what many refer to as "laser ammo" or "laser bullets") is a caliber-specific device that is inserted into your chamber. It projects a laser as your firing pin advances, simulating a shot.

The main advantage of the laser cartridge insert over the other options I've included in this section is the ability to provide visual feedback related to accuracy. Knowing if you are hitting the intended target is an important part of dry-firing practice.

When used with a single action or percussion pistol you will need to pull the slide after each shot to override the trigger, but when used with a double action or double action/single action firearm (DA/SA), you don't need to reset the trigger.

Summary: A simulated cartridge inserted into the chamber that "fires" a laser when struck by the firing pin of the pistol.

LaserLyte manufactures three laser guns dedicated to training. These include a full-size model (think Glock 19, ) with a compact size and a J-frame nose that has a slanted nose.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of these rifles. The triggers don't look realistic (except maybe the revolver), and there's no working magazine or rail. Additionally, the compact has an uncomfortably thin grip and cannot be compared to any real gun.

Still, it's the cheapest option in this category, but I recommend spending the extra $50 and getting the SIRT. Also, I've noticed that they don't work reliably with LASR software when the batteries aren't new.

Summary: Practice laser guns that are more economical, but lack the more realistic feel of competing products.

SIRTs dominate this category, in my opinion. They have more brand credit and for good reason. SIRT stands for "shot indicating reset trigger", and true to the name, the triggers act very realistically with real pickup, pause and reset.

The fifth model is called "pocket pistol" and is similar, but not nearly a replica, like the other models, to the Glock 43 or M&P Shield.

Suggestions For Efficient Dry Fire Practice At Home

All but the pocket pistol have detachable magazines. All models feature a working rail and "take-up" laser, a quality training aid for advanced users or instructors. Oh, and the batteries seem to last almost forever.

Summary: The gold standard (according to the author) of this category. A working rail, detachable magazine, realistic trigger inspired by a specific gun brand, and great overall value.

This product from SmartFirearms has come a long way. Some improvements are an interchangeable magazine and a realistic trigger feel. It also comes in several models to satisfy Glock and M&P users.

The ability to project a laser (which I consider a must-have feature) means buying an accessory that doesn't come with the gun ($119 extra).

However, some features make this option unique. These options include the ability to get a computerized "pop sound" with each pull of the trigger. As well as the "mode" where the gun sounds an alarm if you accidentally put your finger in the trigger guard. Changing the mode to enable or disable these features requires a degree in rocket science, but I'm told future models will be easy to use.

Summary: A pistol dedicated to the practice of dry firing. The laser module is an additional cost, but has a working rail and removable magazine.

Pictured above is my beautifully licensed Elite Force Systems Glock 19 Gen 3 airsoft gun. Umarex / Elite Force manufactures and sells many airsoft guns which may be identical to your actual carry gun (link below). This gives you a very close replica of your actual practice weapon.

Also, as an airsoft gun, you have some recoil. It's not the same as live fire recoil, but it still allows you to practice aiming and controlling recoil in ways you can't with the dedicated laser training devices mentioned above. -above.

I also love that I can use it for dry-firing practice, in addition to using it for distance strength training in the classes I teach my students.

One thing to remember is that you can only use it with airsoft BBs, so you need a target and a backing, which is your precision feedback. You also need a constant supply of air.

Summary: Airsoft guns offer some recoil and can be used with a real physical target. They are also useful for strength training.

The Cool Fire Trainer is a conversion kit that replaces the barrel and recoil spring of your current firearm. They are available for over 60 firearm models and allow you to train with your current weapon. Your scope, your trigger, your magazines, etc.

The barrel is "filled" with CO2 air, and when you pull the trigger, the gun recoils. Sure, it's not the same as true recoil, but it's pretty good for dry-firing. Also, if you want a laser, you have to buy an optional accessory ($100) which I consider an essential component.

It's hard to get better dry-fire "realism" than the Cool Fire Trainer, but consider the "tank" of air is so large, and depending on the gun, you'll get anywhere from 15-30 shots out of a single charge. The constant load is the downside of this product.

Summary: A conversion for your real life firearm that uses air to create recoil. The laser is an optional extra.

Glock Dry Firing

This is the only product in this article that I don't already own. However, I enjoyed using it.
